Rory McIlroy was taking charge of the 2025 Masters up until he wasn't in a heartbreaking opening day at Augusta.
Much has been made about McIlroy's slow starts in Georgia and the trend continued this time round.
Coming into the event as the hot favourite alongside Scottie Scheffler, McIlroy lived up to the billing. It was a patient opening nine for McIlroy, he did all the right things including knocking in some knee knockers and was rewarded with a birdie on the third as he got the tournament underway.
Fast forward to the eighth and ninth holes and it was back-to-back birdies for the Holywood man as he made the turn in three-under-par and breathing down the neck of world number one Scheffler.
McIlroy picked up another birdie on the par five 13th and was playing sensible golf coupled with superb ball striking.
A good drive on the 15th followed by a stalking four iron paved the way for McIlroy to edge ahead of clubhouse leader Scheffler, but it was here where disaster struck. A heavy-handed chip found its way into the water, and the recovery pitch left plenty of work as McIlroy slumped to a double bogey.
Fast forward to the 17th, and McIlroy would fly the green, hit a poor chip, and three-putt for another double to leave himself and viewers shellshocked.
Justin Rose leads the way on seven-under-par, while Ludvig Aberg and Corey Conners join Scheffler on four-under-par.
Shane Lowry showed plenty of grit throughout the first day and finished one under par.

Hard to fathom
When Rory McIlroy hit his 4 iron on the 15th to clear the water it looked like he would chip and putt his way to -5 and two shots behind Scottie Scheffler, instead he hit two doubles in the last three holes.
It was one of the best rounds McIlroy had put together at this course and a complete capitulation.

Double Bogey for McIlroy
That'll be a tough one to stomach. McIlroy does the hard work by hitting a stalking 4 iron over the water on 15 but puts too much on his chip and sees it go into the water. He opts to pitch from the far side and it's not a great approach. Two putts and a double bogey means McIlroy is back to -2.
