As a full-time resident living on Marco Island for over five years, I feel compelled to write and express my sadness at the meanness and anger that anti-short-term rental organizers have caused. The two bands Take Back Marco – where did he go? And Citizens for a Better Marco – again, you can’t get better than Marco Island, so how are they going to make it better? These two groups succeeded in dividing an island and its inhabitants. I actually googled the definition of community – a group of people living in the same place – that’s what Marco Island is, a community of people who live, work and enjoy the beaches and the mode together life in Southwest Florida. But you still get those who want to spoil it. Those who complain about everything and want to change what works because it doesn’t quite fit their story. Marco Island is a bustling coastal town with jet ski tours, dolphin and shelling tours, bike and golf cart rentals, and a myriad of other businesses that depend on tourism and our visitors. We have been told that this new order is just a registration. This is not a vehicle to ultimately ban vacation rental homes. We will see. There will be repercussions if we lose our visitors who come every year to spend a long weekend or a week in the Marco Island community. Please Marco Island residents vote NO in August.
