There are plenty of water parks to explore in the Granite State each summer, but this one can take the cake. The small town of Franklin has big plans with its new Mill town park open mid-September. Owner, Founder and Director Marty Parichand is responsible for bringing the park to life with its innovative and unique whitewater rafting park, guided trails, river views, community gardens, amphitheater and more, with two other whitewater features that will open in 2022. The main goal? Connect the community to the river with low cost outdoor fun.
For the 20th anniversary of Seek the top, organizers have transformed what was once an annual White Mountain hike into an exhibit filled with other outdoor activities (all human-powered), and will feature virtual and on-site events to celebrate the spirit of adventure. What hasn’t changed is the charity aspect – this is still a vital fundraiser for the nonprofit Mount Washington Observatory. This year, July 16 and 17, the event is open to everyone, from experienced hikers to beginners. Whether you like mountain biking, fly fishing, trail running or climbing, Seek the Peak welcomes outdoor sports enthusiasts. Experts will organize clinics (virtual and in person), and there are opportunities for guided and self-guided activities. Great Glen Trails on Mount Washington Auto Road will serve as base camp.
Squambats, come together!
The next time an unidentified object crosses the horizon in the Lake District, be quiet. It could be just a Squambat. the Squambats are a group of adrenaline-fueled “ice sailors” who whip, hover, zoom, fly and float on the surface of New Hampshire lakes. During the colder months, the Squambats (Squam Lake is their home port) traverse the ice and snow on kitewings and skis or skates – carried aloft and through the frozen landscape and the wide by the wind power, pushing and lifting these thrill seekers to top speeds of 58mph. In the warmer months it’s all about foiling, flying and kiting on the water, where runners hit 25mph as they leap over the waves.
Our home lives were paradoxically both isolated and over-connected. As many turned to small and large screens to work and talk to family and friends, unplugging became even more difficult. Blake Brook Getaway at Epsom has the solution. The amenities and features of these small fully furnished cabins include a huge picture window, two queen-size beds, a shower, potable water, air conditioning and heating, an electric toilet, a mini-kitchen, a fireplace and, above all, a safe for your cell phone. If you crack and break a device, you won’t find any Wi-Fi. Campers can enjoy the restorative aspects of nature in comfort and without any electronic interruptions. Cabins are spaced 50 to 100 feet apart on 20 acres of Bear Brook Sate Park, so human interaction is kept to a minimum. However, if you fancy a little company, the excellent Blasty Bough Brewery is within walking distance.
High-end ski chalet
The new Rosebrook Lodge at the top of the Bretton Woods Skyway Gondola combines a chic ski resort feel with a traditional lodge. Inside the striking building, hungry skiers and runners can grab a pizza or sandwich at Crystal Hill, and those who just want to dine in an unusual setting can sit at the Switchback Grille for cocktails and specials. European inspiration such as raclette. The Skyway – the state’s first eight-person gondola – is also quite impressive, and you’d be hard-pressed to beat the views of Mt. Washington and the presidential lineup.
This sport has been around since 1976 and keeps gaining more and more interest with everyone. Top O ‘The Hill Disc Golf in Canterbury is celebrating 10 years in business this year, and owner Marty Vaughn says even a pandemic can’t slow them down. The 18-hole, four-season course is open seven days a week and costs just $ 8 for a round or a full day of disc golf. Whether you are a beginner disc golfer or a seasoned pro, or whether you play solo, with friends or with family, this course will have you coming back for more outdoor fun.
